  • AITJ for refusing to BABYSIT my sisters kids so i could go to a concert I waited for 6 months?
  • I (26F) have a sister Blessy (32F) who has two kids (5M and 3F). I love my nephew and niece, but my sister always assumes i am free to watch them because i am single and dont have kids of my own.

  • So here is the problem. I bought tickets to see my favorite artist in concert about six months ago.
    via Important_Carry1095
  • These tickets were expensive for me, like $300, and i have been so excited. I took the day off work and everything.
    via Important_Carry1095
  • On the day of the concert, literally 2 hours before i need to leave, Blessy calls. me. She sounds panicked and says her babysitter canceled last minute. She and her husband have a wedding to go to that night.

  • She didnt even ask, she just said, i'm coming over to drop the kids off, thank god you are home.

  • Mom is dropping her kids off to be babysat by a family member.
  • I told her no. i told her i have this concert and i cannot miss it. She got really mad. She said It is just a concert, this is a family emergency. I told her a wedding is not an emergency. It is a party. If she cant find a sitter, one of them should stay home.

  • She started crying and said i am being selfish and that i care more about some stupid singer than my own family. She hung up and ended up missing the wedding because her husband went alone.

  • Now my mom is calling me saying i am the j bcoz blessy was looking forward to this night out for months and i ruined it. They are saying i could have sold the ticket or just skipped it to help my sister.

  • I feel bad she missed the wedding, but i dont think its fair that i have to give up my plans just because i dont have kids. AITJ?
    via Important_Carry1095
  • TL;DR: My sister tried to drop her kids off at my house last minute so she could go to a wedding. I refused because i had expensive concert tickets i bought months ago. She missed the wedding and now my family says i am selfish.

  • TryingtoAdultPls Help NTJ - why didn't your mom take the kids? You had plans as well, plans that you invested money in. Plans you made 6 months ago. Don't fall into the trap of thinking just because you are childless, you need to sacrifice more for family. If this was a friend's band that performs every month at the same place, it would be another story, but this was a favorite artist who is not in the area often. Was your sister willing to pay you $300 to make up for the loss of money on ticket

  • OP Important_Carry1095 Thats the thing she didn't even offer to pay for the tickets! she just kept saying family helps family and made me feel guilty. My mom didnt step up because she said she was too tired from work. So basically, everyones time is valuable except mine. It really s ks being the childless sibling sometimes.

  • Different-Idea-8203 Your sister is a heifer! Its just a wedding plan better next time sis!
    via Different-Idea-8203
  • OP Important_Carry1095 Omg thank you! I felt like I was going crazy bcoz my mom was making me feel so guilty about it. Like, i love my niece and nephew but i pay for my own life, you know? A wedding is definitely not an emergency lol.

  • Dunno2128 NTJ, but your sister and your mum are! Why didn't your mother babysit? Not your kids, not your problem.

  • redelectro7 Sounds like a problem Al would come up with.

  • mcmurrml The cost isn't even the point. OP didn't want to miss the concert at all.
    via mcmurrml
  • Due_Cricket1885 Should've asked the Al to babysit

  • Used Clock_4627 Wondering if there was even a babysitter scheduled at all. Wouldn't be the first time 'family' lied about preplanned childcare just so they didn't have to pay someone in the end. OP is NTJ. And should maybe say 'no' more often to get the point across.

  • NTJ jmp397 Unless this was a family wedding they were all attending, then any of the people calling you selfish could've stepped up to watch the kids (unless they live too far) Yes it s ks missing out on things as a parent because you don't have a sitter, but you have a life and plans as well.

  • velessyn NTJ, plans are plans 6 months and money invested count. But family emergencies hit different, a quick "sorry, can't" without details keeps it smooth. S ks for ur sister, but her sitter issue isn't ur fault

  • DocShady God, there fake stories are all that same. Here is my plan, family member/friend asks me to do something unreasonable, I refuse, parent/authority figure takes complainants side. Different story, same DNA every time.
